*eyeroll*

Widget busted out this afternoon with "Daddy told me this morning that I'm getting chubby."

"He did? Really?" (meanwhile, rational brain is trying to re-assure the lizard brain that it's VERY unlikely that he did any such thing. Lizard brain is FAR too busy trying to figure out the best way to flay him for maximum pain if he did.)

"Yeah. But he told me that it's normal - when people grow up, they don't just get taller, they grow out too."

"I see."

So, when Wiley comes upstairs, I ask him "Did you really tell Widget that she was getting chubby?" and got the real story.

He'd merely told her that the jeans she wanted to wear this morning are too small for her. Which they are - I'd like to see the kid they were made for (I had to trim 2 inches off the bottom, and they totally don't fit her. They're made for the girl's size equivalent of a runway model, it would seem.)

So glad. I'd hate to have clean all that blood of the walls.

I felt my blood boiling but I decided to suspend judgement until I got to the end of your post. Phewwww. So he DIDN'T say she was getting chubby! Good, good, good.

Just in case you need it, for future reference. :)

Wow, good to see everyone has faith in me raising my daughter. :P

Well, I have confidence in you. So was there further discussion about the difference between "those pants don't fit" and "chubby"?

Yeah, but apparently it didn't sink in very far, since she went and said what she said to Mommy anyway.

I remember my dad telling me at about age 13 that the pants I wanted to wear were too small. They WERE too small, but I badly wanted to wear them for whatever reason. Hurt my feelings for pretty much....ever. So I can see why you'd worry.

I would have been shocked if Widget's telling of the tale were completely accurate. But really, she knows about the idea of being "chubby"? That just makes me sad.

I had this conversation with a colleague, once, about our very first recollection of being chubby, or awareness of it in ourselves.

We both agreed that it's shockingly young, and then further distorted by things we are exposed to (TV, magazines...).

I'm sad that Widget got to experience it.

My mom told Katie she was getting fat the other day and you should have seen me try not to completely lose it. I managed to calmly say that we don't say that and she immediately apologized.
