Dec. 13th, 2001 03:11 pmI had an interesting conversation with my brother today.
Wiley and I need to figure out who we want to name as guardian for Widget, should something happen. That in itself is sobering to think about - who wants to plan for their own death?
But, my Dad thinks we should name someone within the family, and knows he and Mom don't want the honor (Thank God, because in truth, I didn't really want to pick them either.) I'm inclined to agree with him, although I don't know if it'll be possible. With my parents out, that leaves: Wiley's Mom, or one of my siblings. Wiley's Mom would not be a bad choice, if she's interested. I'm not sure she will be - after all, she's done raising her kid, and really seems to enjoy the foot-loose and fancy-free life she's got in Roswell. And we have to consider whether we'd want to move Hannah that far away from my family as well. Of my siblings, we have James, who's a dear boy, but currently living at home, pumping gas, and dating a woman (secretly planning on marrying, I should add) who I don't want anywhere near Hannah, never mind raising her; my sister Rebecca, who I'm 99% sure doesn't want kids, and is about to start medical school in a year and a half anyway; and my brother Nick, who's still in college, but is relatively stable, will be well employed when he's done, and wants kids, eventually. So, it's a clear choice, if we want to keep her care in the family. Kate or Nick.
If we look outside of family, it gets more complicated. I have friends that I think would make great parents, and other that wouldn't. My opinion of their parenting skills don't necessarily match with their assessment of thier skills. And most of them aren't married yet, which means we'd be crapshooting on who Widget's other parent would be, and I'm not too comfortable with that. Wiley suggested my best friend Elaine, and I could do that, mostly because the guy she's engaged to is so damn nice. It's just so much o think about.
On an unrelated note, Wiley ordered me a Christmas present that arrived today, and is sitting on his desk chair calling to me. I *know* I shouldn't open it, but ooooooooh, do I want to. Ooooooooh!
