The culinary adventures continue
Jun. 25th, 2008 12:15 amSo, canned the preserves last night. It worked in that all the jars seems to seal as they were supposed to, and not there's beautiful ruby preserves on my counter. It appears that it did not set well, and I suspect that this is due to the fact that the recipe didn't use any pectin - none of the recipes I found did, but I think it must have needed some. Now I'll know better for next time. I'm inordinately pleased with myself on this one, mostly because it's yet one more of those odd things that's always seemed far harder than it's turned out to be and I'm pleased I managed to get over myself long enough to try it.
We washed, hulled and froze most of the rest of the berries last night - I think we put away about 14-15 pounds for using later on in the year.
We saved out just enough that I could try another thing that I've never worked up the nerve to try - pie, with real pie crust. Again, always been intimidated as heck by it, but well, there's no way to learn it other than DOING it, right? I finally figured out (in my own head, my own worst enemy most days) that even if it's not great, it can't be worse than the store bought crusts that I always leave on the side of my plate, and I can always get better. It's due to come out of the oven in about 5 minutes. I suspect, from the way it was behaving when I was rolling it and building the pie that it won't be great, but it looks awfully pretty in the oven.
We'll see if it tastes good tomorrow after dinner, I figure.
And this might be crazy, but I totally want to go back and pick more this weekend. I AM insane, aren't I?
