Sigh

Today started out as such a great day. Widget (kind of) slept in, until 8:30 or so. Wiley gave her breakfast, and I headed out to get the rest of my vegetable into their bed (more on that in a few). They came out to join me after she ate, and we puttered around in the yard for a while. My neighbor, who has a gorgeous yard poked her head over the fence and asked if I wanted some violets, and when I went over there to dig them, ended up giving me three other plants as well. I know she was just thinning out, but it was nice of her to offer. So I planted those too, and started shifting my bulbs around a bit as well (They were to spaced out this year - for next year I'm arranging them in bunches of clumps).

Finished that up, cleaned myself off, got Widget ready, and we headed off to our friends Bill and Linda's place to help them get their boat ready for the season. Somewhere in there, Hannah's whining really pissed me off and put me in a bad mood.

Widget and I hung out with Linda while Wiley and Bill worked on the boat. First, Widget headbutted me, giving me a lovely cut and bruise under my eye. Then we went outside, and in crawling around, she stumbled and gave herself a bloody nose (and I'm trying to calm her down, and stop her from bleeding, and Linda's giving me grief about how I need to just "calm down" I almost slugged her) and got two huge bug bites (one right on her eyelid). Then, as we're leaving, Widget leans forward in her car seat right as I'm buckling the clip that goes across her chest, and I catch her lip in it, which brings more bleeding and more screaming. Wiley calmed her down this time, and we make the trek home. But, not surprisingly, all this has left her a little on edge, and she spends most of the rest of the day crying over EVERYTHING. Which, given that I'm already sick of listening to whining, is nota good combination.

Then, once we get home, I'm trying to relax a bit instead of rushing around to get ready to go out to help a friend do the "it's over" celebration for the CFA exam she took today, and Wiley keeps trying to rush me, which I don't need (And for the record, I was all of 4 minutes late getting there, and that had more to do with the stupid people in Dorchester). So we have dinner, and it's fun and all, I guess. They all went to get ice cream - I started to, then saw that the line for JP Licks was out to the sidewalk, and I bailed on the idea.

Now I just feel blah. Guess I'll go to bed.

consisted of finishing up my little vegetable plot. I started it yesterday in the rain, but got driven inside by loud thunder and nearby lightening. As much as I'd like to go out hit by lightening, yesterday wasn't the day.

So, I finished up this morning, and I now have 4 tomato plants (a lemon boy, a marglobe and two I don't remember), 6 bell pepper plants, 6 cucumber plants, 2 acorn squash, 4 zucchini, 4 eggplant, and 3 yellow squash plantlings (all pretty much standard hybrids) out there. I got it all mulched over, and started sorting through the rocks to find good border rocks for the front, and Wiley did a couple of test seed spots for the grass seed we bought. We can' overseed the whole thing right now, because that takes a LOT of water, and we're under a water ban right now, but we can at least get some idea of how it will do, so we can try in the fall.

I also inherited some new plants from my neighbor, but I'm not sure what they all were. They're really pretty though, and she says they all grow like gangbusters, so I might have enough to transplant to other locations in the fall.

If any of you around Boston has any interest, I have a couple leftover acorn squash and zucchini seedlings. Let me know if you want them. Otherwise, they'll probably get a pot treatment, just to see what happens.

I must remember to order some earthworms and compost tea on Monday!
