More fun than I expected

This morning Wiley, Widget and I decided to go to a geocaching event planned by some local cachers. It was close to home, and at a good time for us, schedule wise, after all.

I was feeling a bit trepidacious, as I know none of the people going, and aside from a map location, I didn't even know WHERE we were going. The limited clues in the post for the event were not enough to google and track down where we were supposed to go. But, I figured, what the heck - after all, if it sucked, we could just leave, right?

Well, it turns out that "The James" refers to a small private library in the "historic center of Norwell", and it was an absolutely charming place. The gathering was held downstairs in the small art gallery, which also held the mystery section for the library. The people we met were all nice. I was a little surprised, I think I expected a younger geekier crowd, but most of the folks were older than Wiley and I, and most were not discernably geeky. There was, however, one guy there who was logging his 500th cache today. Yow!

All in all, it was rather like going to a first TIM party, except that really, no one knew anyone else, so there was no greeting of old friends. Since geocaching is a more solitary endeavour, it was more like recognizing names you'd seen than talking to people you'd only known virtually until then.

But, it was fun, and I think I'd definitely go to another event - especially as we do more caching this spring, and will recognize more of the names we'll encounter when we do. I'm pleased with myself too. Usually I have a hard time getting out of my "shell" and talking to strangers, but I tried harder this time, and instead of just floating around the sidelines I actually chatted with people. Funny how much more fun that is, eh?

One strange thing

There are two caches in the park near our house, and depending on the path you take, and the time of year, you can actually see our house as you walk from on to the other. It's slightly weird to go back and read the logs for these caches, and know that all these folks were so close to where we live. Hee.

Wiley has gone off to get all his hair cut off. Can we have a moment of silence for the disappearing hair?

Well, it's short. I'm still getting used to it. But I've never been one to tell others what to do with their hair, so, I'll just hush up now. I think it was time, though.

I finally watched Boys Don't Cry tonight. Wow. I'm still reeling from it, I think. Hillary Swank was just stunning. I think I'll try to learn some more about the case as well.
