Garden stuffage
Jul. 8th, 2003 06:39 pmWell, my tomatoes are going wild. It seems I have two big varieties, one that seems to be producing pear shared little ones, and a cherry. All four are covered in blossoms, and all but the cherry are also covered in fruit.
My brussles and brocolli are putting out lots and lots of leaves, no sign of any vegetable yet, but I'm not even sure what I should be loking for with them, so I'm just waiting and seeing.
I've finally got some blossoms on my cantalopes, and my zucchinis are HUGE, and actually setting fruit this year (I've got at least 2 on every plant). BUT (and there's always a but, isn't there?) they seem to have once again been infested by powdery mildew. I've found many websites claiming that spraying them with a 10%milk / 90% water solution will keep it at bay, I've got to get a new spray bottle and try that. I'll be very sad if these plants end up dying too.
At the moment, the darn garden looks like a patch of lawn with some vegetables, it's been so hot I haven't had any motivation to go out there and weed. I finally did this morning and headed out for a little while. I'd put the soaker hose on, since it's easier to weed when the ground is a bit moist, but the readily available water source attracted what seemed to be every single bee and wasp in my entire neighborhood. When it got to the point that I couldn't put my hands down for fear of hitting a bee, it was time to come inside. I have no desire to ever use the EpiPen in my desk drawer.
Aside from the mildew and the weeds, though, the garden seems to be going swimmingly. I'm really pleased.
