Widget was adorable tonight in her tiger suit. We painted her nose black and gave her whiskers (all black eyeliner) and she insisted that Imagy and I do the same. (Yes, there will be pictures, but I had to take them with the film camera, since the digital is with Wiley in India.) We've been practicing her roaring, and her trick-or treat manners all week, hoping that she wouldn't get buried by the shy bug when we took her out.
We had one little near meltdown, but it worked out in the end. We had planned her dinner out so we could wrap it up early, and hit the street. When dinner was ready, she had just started playing with her Big Bird car, and we made her put it in the toybox before dinner. When she'd finished, all of a sudden she didn't want to go out any more. "No, I don't want to go out. Want to stay here and watch the music." Imagy and I asked her why, and all she'd say was that she didn't want to go out. Finally, she said "I just want to go play in my toybox", so we shrugged and told her to go ahead. After all, it's no skin of our noses if she doesn't go out, right? About 20 seconds later, she's back in the Living room, holding her Big bird car, and says "I just wanted to get Big Bird", and then says "Big Bird wants to go out with me. He likes candy too."
We laughed and told her Big Bird could come with us, and I took her up to get dressed in her costume. We did whiskers and noses, and waited for Damien to arrive so we could go out and have someone manning the candy bowl. While we were waiting, she announced that Big Bird needed candy *now*, and she did too. So we gave her a Tootsie Roll pop, and tucked another one into Big Bird's car.
Then Damien arrived and we headed out. We went to about 8 houses, mostly all the neighbors we know. She said "Trick or Treat, please" and Thank you at every house (granted, with a little prompting). She was very excited, and we had a good time. We came home, and she seemed to think she was going to get to eat all her candy right away (ummmm, no. She got a LOT of candy). I let her choose one, and she gobbled it down. When I told her she shouldn't have any more, she decided that Big Bird needed to eat his lollipop. Heh.
She I opened it up and gave it to her since she had decided that he wanted to share with her. She ate a little bit of it, then didn't want to "share" with Big Bird. I told her she had to since it was his, and if she didn't I'd take it away, so she decided to start sharing after all. She ate the lollipop, got all sticky and then asked for MORE candy. I told her she could have one more piece RIGHT before she went to bed, and she could decided when she wanted it, but she would go to bed right away after it. She tried to ask for more in a couple of round about ways after that, but dquickly figured out that they wouldn't work, so she decided that running around the house in circles for the next 45 minutes was a great plan.
When it came time to wash off our noses, I found that the eyeliner had ground itself into my pores, and I'm still covered in little black spots. Argh.
And the funniest costume of the night had to be the 11 or 12 year old boy, dressed up in full (girl) cheerleader outfit, complete with the blond wig. I nearly peed myself laughing. Overall, the kids were polite and nice, and had to be encouraged to take more than one piece of candy. I also don't think we had anyone older than about 12 or 13. Yay for no pushy teenagers. Lots of vampires, a number of princesses, and a viking who was surprised I knew what he was.
