Good party fun
Jul. 4th, 2004 12:19 amWidget and I headed to a Fourth of July party at
cranapril's this afternoon - fun for both of us, because I like her, and Widget loves her two boys - P is 4 months older than Widget and J is 9 (I think), and Widget's has the biggest case of hero worship for J that I think I've ever seen.
They (and J's friend) careened around their HUGE yard for most of the afternoon, spraying each other with the hose (Widget even took getting sprayed in the face without crying) and getting completely soaked through, playing with stomp rockets, exploring in the woods behind the house. She looked like she was having the time of her LIFE. I'm glad she had so much fun. Made me sad that she doesn't have any little cousins or anything to make holidays and family gatherings more fun. She suffers a bit because my brothers are so much younger and not ready to start settling down and having families yet. Of course, on the other hand, she gets spoiled like only an only grandchild gets spoiled, too.
The grown-ups (
cranapril and her husband,
lorac and her husband,
smurfchick and
kieron, and a few other friends I didn't know) relaxed on the porch while the kids played all wild. Definitely nice to have other grownups to entertain Widget during my day of solo duty when she needed adult intervention. It was also great to let her go run around without checking on her all the time - most of the time at home I'm a keep-my-eye-on-the-kid type of parent; our yard isn't huge, and there's a few too many careless teenage driver on our street. Out there, they're got so much space, and since there were the other kids around, I let Widget off the leash a little bit. Good for both of us.
After dinner, we fired up a campfire and roasted marshmellows. Widget got to try what I think was her first s'more, and she liked it so much she wouldn't share with me at all. She also tried out her first sparklers. She was entranced by them and scared of them at the same time. What a picture she made, holding out as far from her body as she could, her face a mixture of enthralled and worried as it sparkled in front of her. She definitely liked it when the big boys threw boxes of them on the fire, and the sparklers went up in a big pouf. She wasn't so sure about the louder fireworks that Cran's husband was firing off - too loud, even if they were pretty.
