The meltdown to end all meltdowns
Mar. 10th, 2004 04:49 pmOh boy did we have ourselves a *meltdown* this morning. Wow. It was amazing. And we started the day off so well....
When Miss Widget got up this morning, she told me that she wanted to get dressed, then go downstairs and play, then go get Imagy. "And I want Titi to get me a bagel this morning, Mama". No problem, right? She's up an hour+ before Imagy calls, we've got plenty of time.
Except that she takes over 45 minutes to get dressed. She likes to get dressed herself, down on the floor, and she goofs around and plays while we're doing it. Which I have no problem with. Days I need her to move quickly, she usually does. Days like today, I don't hurry her, because there's no reason to.
By the time we're dressed and downstairs, she's got about 10 minutes until Imagy calls. Which is, in her mind, not the amount of time she thought she needed for her playing. So when the phone rings, she starts to holler, and stall. Whatever. I help her pick up the toys, etc, and I bring her coat in.
And that's when it starts.
"No, Mama, I don't want to go. I don't *want* to put my coat on!" "Widget, you need to put your coat on, we don't want to make Titi wait" "Noooooo, I don't want to put my coat on!!!!!!!" Complete with the little hand flaps that make it impossible to *get* her coat on.
Hmmmm, do I wrestle with her, and force the coat on? Temperature check? 41 degrees. Nope!
"Fine, then, we'll go without your coat." And I pick her up and start walking out. And instantly "No, Mama. I need my coat, I want to put my coat on!" Now normally, when she plays this little game, I call her bluff, she changes her mind, we put on the coat (or do whatever the conflict revolved around), and all is well with the world.
Not this morning. I've about had it with this particular little game, see. And while usually, the object of conflict isn't something I can choose not to do, a coat in 41 degree weather, for a 5 minute round trip out to the corner? *That* I can enforce. So instead of getting the coat and putting it on, we march right out the door to the car.
Cue.... teh screaming.
My god. We haven't gotten three steps and she's yelling "I'm coooold! Mama, I NEED my coat!" I plop her in her seat, and she does the arching thing so I can't get the straps on. I get her buckled, and she starts yelling, "No, I want to go inside and get my coat! Mama! Don't drive, I want my coat!" I pull out of the driveway and get "Mama, turn around! I need to go home and get my coat!" The whole way out to Dunkins, nothing but wails. We get Imagy and head for home, still wailing, despite my telling her we were on our way home.
She was *still* sniffly when I left for the office 15 minutes later.
And all I could do was laugh.
