Jeez Louise, I'm tired today.

Two nights of staying up past 1 AM, and I'm toast.

When did I get so lame?

you kids, get off my lawn!

You didn't get lame, just old.

Sadly, I've found that the ability to tolerate sleep deprivation has really faded with time!

My weeks used to consist of little to no sleep, paid for by sleeping through most of Saturday's daylight hours and getting a good night's sleep Sunday night.

Now, I can gauge just how miserable I'll be the next day based on how long after 10:00 am I stay up. Not even caffeine helps me much anymore. All it can REALLY do is keep me from getting a good night's sleep if I drink coffee after 2:00 pm.

I don't think it's getting older that does it. My Grandparents barely sleep at all.

No, it's responsibility.

When I could stay up all week and sleep it off on Saturday, my responsibilities were largely limited to doing well in school. The more responsibility I accumulated the more vulnerable I became to the need for sleep. The more things I had to do the less I could time shift my sleep needs.

I shudder to think what this means for the impending birth of my first child. That's more responsibility than I've had in my entire LIFE.

Yeah, I'm completely dead today too, and I went to bed at 10:20.

I'm guessing you mean 10 pm up there?
Coffee after 2 keeps me up too. Le sigh.

While people's need for sleep declines somewhat with age, people still don't get as much sleep as they think (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/07/060703162945.htm) or often, as much as they need.

A looser schedule definitely makes it easier to recover from lack of sleep - that's not necessarily the same as responsibility, though.

From my other friends who have had kids, you're in for about two years of varied degrees of segmented sleep. Enjoy the long nights while you can.

I actually find my tolerance for sleep deprivation is much higher now that I'm older. Yeah, I'm toast too, after getting in at 2AM last night, but I can handle the upcoming day a lot more easily than I could have ten years ago.

I know exactly what you mean. Getting older sucks.

By the way, was yesterday evening as quiet as you expected?

Oh even one like this and I'm pretty done for. I think I mean I know that I can handle it. Yeah, I'm tired and a wreck, but such a thing used to feel like the end of the world or something. Now I know it's not, and that I can get through it and sleep later.

For me, the warranties all started expiring around 38. YMMV. :) Just, you know...so you have something to look forward to.

I started losing that ability at 20, and to be honest, my brain has always paid me back in pain for not keeping a consistent sleep schedule so I never really _had_ it. It was just that as a teenager you needed to do it along with everyone else in order to be there for some of the most interesting socialization hours. My body just makes me pay and pay if sleep and blood sugar aren't kept nice and consistent.

God, I'm going to get lamer?

Much.

Ever so much more.

Some people from our office go to Trivia Night at a local bar on Thursday nights. The trivia starts at 8:00. We've never gone.

We're never out that late any more.

*sob*

Does that mean eventually I'll get my wish and NOT HAVE TO SLEEP AT ALL!?

Halleyscomet keeps reminding me that its okay to be tired and run out of steam because "I'm very busy on a cellular level" right now. But I do hate the fact that its so damned unpredictable. I'll go weeks with no problem then BHAM! last night I'm catching cat naps on the couch for most of the evening and gave up for bed at 9:30. This does NOT make it easy for me to do anything productive with my time.

My parents are mid-late 70's. While they don't need a full night's sleep, it is because they are sleeping off and on all day long. They don't sleep all that much less, just not all at one time. So don't count on getting all your late nights back.
