Thanksgiving and weekend
Dec. 1st, 2002 12:08 amI hope that all of you had a lovely Thanksgiving. I did. We went to my parents in CT for the annual family gathering. It's the one day each year that I see my Dad's brother and his family, so I look forward to the holiday just for that, if nothing else. We had 16 people (not counting Hannah) at the table this year, and as always, we were packed in with just about no elbow room.
My mom cooked a delicious meal, as always, but I still managed to blow my diet only a little bit (Go me!). Widget decided to nap through dinner so Wiley and I got to have a peaceful meal with adults. She, of course, charmed all the folks who were there - she's the first baby in the family since Peter was born (and he's fourteen or fifteen this year) so everyone pays lots of attention to her, and loves her to death.
My aunt brought me a quilt that my great-grandmother had made as well. As quilts go, it isn't the most beautiful I've ever seen, but it's still another family piece that I wouldn't have had otherwise, so I shall endeavour to take good care of it, and try to get good use out of it. She says she's giving me these pieces because she knows I appreciate handwork, and because her kids never really knew great-grandma, and she'd rather they go to someone who knew her. I think that is so sweet.
She also gave me, as a baby shower gift, a baby quilt that great-grandma had stitched for her daughter Sarah when she was born. It hangs on Widget's wall now, across from her crib, and I look forward to telling her about her great-great grandma when she gets a little older. I need to write a thank you note to Lynn to tell her how much I appreciate her passing these things on to me.
Yesterday was a quiet day at home. I actually managed to paticipate in "Buy Nothing Day". I almost blew it in the evening when I seriously pondered ordering Chinese food in, but remembered before I called, so I think I did well. Resisted the urge to go out for coffee in the morning, resisted the quick-and-easy online shopping, and staying away from the mall was absolutely no problem (I'm hoping to not have to go there until at least Dec. 26th). I'm very proud that I managed to do this, and very sad at just how difficult it turned out to be. Not in the sense that I was deprived of anything I needed, but in terms of how much thought it took to remember and act accordingly.
Wiley went off snowboarding for the evening and I stayed in and got my Christmas cards addressed, except for the few I am missing addresses on, and then I worked some more on all my Christmas ornaments and stitched gifts. I'm most of the way there on the actual stitching part - I've got three projects about 2/3 finished, and one not started (but it's mate only took 2 1/2 evenings. Since I'm spending the entire next week in Tucson I should be able to get all these squared away. (Now I must go outside, turn around three times and spit, for I have incurred the wrath of the thing high atop the thing, and thus my trip shall suck rotten eggs). I'll take a day off work sometime in the week after that and spend the entire day locked in my room hunched over the sewing machine, and all my Christmas presents shall be finished! I think we have fewer than 10 things to buy at this point, so we should be in good shape.
Today was lunch with Miss
sarahparah and her lovely daughter Isabella (who is definitely as cute as her pictures, and absolutely charming). It was lovely to see her again, and the girls got along rather well. She got some lovely pictures, but we shall have to wait until she gets home to share them. The rest of the day has been uneventful. More stitching, cooking dinner, watching teevee. You know, the usual.
But, it's late now, and I should probably get my sad little butt to bed before my hands freeze off. Night all!
