More Hannah tales
Feb. 2nd, 2003 12:10 amToday my father and I took Widget to the Children's Museum, since the weather was too crummy to do anything outside. We took the train into the city, since I hate driving in town, and there's no point paying for parking. I think she had a good time, I know we had a good time watching her.
There were, of course, a couple of cute highlights. Apparently, at one point, I'd gone in search of a restroom, and Hannah decided that some other strange woman's lap was as good as mine... she just walked over to this other mom, plopped herself down, and thumb in mouth, sat there contentedly. Nice to know I'm so replaceable, eh?
Then, coming home on the train, she decided that it was appropraite to start yelling "Stop, thief" at the top of her lungs. (We've been reading Peter Rabbit, and that's what Mr. McGregor yells after Peter in the garden.) Luckily, all the people around us on the train just thought she was cute. Definitely one of those "Hmmmmm, I wish I could figure out how her brain works" moments - we haven't read the book in a day or two, and I didn't see anything the would have prompted the connection in my head. I really do wish she came with a little manual.
She liked the train ride into town, although she seems a little unsure on the in-the-tunnel loud parts. She liked riding through downtown in her stroller, and she certainly loved running around at the museum. She was too small to play on a lot of the jungle-gym-y stuff they have, and she was too short to play with the boat exhibit, but she had fun in the 3-and-under room, loved the raceway exhibit (rolling golf balls down ramps and stuff), and I think she would have played with the hula hoops in the 1950's grandparent's exhibit all day if we hadn't gotten bored with it.
Since she hadn't napped all day, she snapped a bit at the dinner table tonight (she really wanted to eat with her fingers, and we wouldn't let her) and then she snapped some more at bedtime. She did so good while were out, though. Her only temper tantrums were once when my dad took the truck she was playingwith away with no warning (we'd decided to move on, and he's not well versed in the art of distraction when removing toys) and when we were leaving, because she wanted to stay and play.
We definitely do need to get her into some sort of social interaction environment though - she just kind of stares dumbfounded at other kids, and doesn't seem to 'get it". Maybe she's still technically too young, but I really should try and find her some little friends. And it's still weird - she's so tall for her age that when I see her around other kids who seem more "advanced" than she is, I'm never sure if they're older than her, and just smaller, or if they are the same age, and smarter. It's kind of funny. I'm sure I'm overthinking the whole thing, no need to tell me.
