So, as most of y'all know, I turned thirty last month. As the first of my four close girlfriends to hit this particular mile marker on the road of life, we decided to go off and do something faaaaabulous to celebrate. We decided that a weekend trip to Manhattan was just the ticket. Since D had the test from hell last weekend, we put off the trip until this past one.

And oooooh, what a time we had!

Left Friday morning, drove to Stamford, and took the train from there. D's mom let us borrow her boat of a Lincoln, so the four of us were travelling in comfort and luxury. Grabbed a quick lunch, hopped on the train, got to Grand Central about 4:00. Walked over to our hotel (we stayed at the Waldorf Astoria) checked in and flopped out for a while. Headed out for dinner here. Dinner was amazing, and terrifyingly expensive. I had grilled asparagus and bacon, the roasted wild salmon, we split a chese plate, and I had the fromage blanc mousse. We "passed left" with the desserts, so everyone got a taste of everything and it was heavenly.

Then we walked accross the street to here for drinks. We had a round there (and almost all the ones we picked were bad or paint-thinner strong) and then we headed downtown to return to the Oak Room at the Plaza. Once there we were delighted to find that you "can go home again", and that the Cosmopolitans lived up to their vaunted memories. A round of those, a round of sidecars, and we headed back out to go to our hotel. (At this point, I was buzzed enough that when I missed a curb, I actually fell down. Oooops. Luckily, with no injury.) We tried to have another round at the Waldorf, then decided we all just wanted back to the room, so we did.

Saturday morning, I awoke at an ungodly hour of the morning, and there was no getting back to sleep. So I tiptoed out of the room and went walkabout with myself. Walked down Lexington Avenue to about 35th Street, then cut overand walked back up to the hotel on Madison. Stopped and got myself a big breakfast when it started to rain. Walked the rest of the way back in the rain, woke the ladies up, and vegged while they got ready for the day.

First stop, after coffee, was the Museum of the city of New York. I wanted to see the exhibit on the 1920's. Sadly, a little disappointed by it - I've taken classes on the era, so there was little new there for me. Some of the dresses and other fashion displays were interesting. Also checked out the Harlem exhibit, and some other things. Finished there, had some lunch, tried to go to the American Folk Art Museum. On our first try, we ended up in the wrong place. On our second try, we ended up stopping in the Museum of Arts and Design first. Small, but with a neat art glass exhibit (although I think that's closing soon). Then to the proper American Folk Art Museum, which was disappointing. They're in the middle of opening a large new exhibit, and it took up 3 of 4 floors. Most of it didn't have appropriate signage yet, so you were never sue what you were looking at. It's all Folk art and baseball, so I think it'll be great when it's done (Kriss, you might want to check it out when you're in New York, if you have time).

After that, a little shoe browsing, and then back to the hotel for a quick nap. Then, dinner here. The steaks were amazing, and who can turn down to concept of all the wine you can drink? (Not that we were drinking all that much, since we'd hurt ourselves a bit the night before). After that, back to the hotel, where we all crashed out.

Sunday we went to Chinatown for Dim Sum (and that was an adventure - we pretty well got dropped at the wrong end of it, and had to walk past store after store with open air fish stalls to find what we wanted. Not the best plan.) but once we got there, dim sum was delicious. After that we went to the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, which was my favorite museum of the weekend. I really enjoyed the apartment tour, although the walking tour was more scattered and less enjoyable, sadly (which is too bad. It's an idea with a lot of potential.) We found amazing gelato (really. We went back twice.) After that we made a quick stop at Toys in Babeland, then reclaimed our suitcases and headed for the train.

An uneventful ride home landed me back in Weymouth with planty of time to hang out with Wiley and veg before bed time. I had a wonderful weekend, and now I can't wait for the next 30th birthday!

Oooo, thanks! You're right, "The Perfect Game: America Looks at Baseball" opens on June 17. That's just made the itinerary! (You're link to the museum is broken, but I found it okay anyway.)

wow!
