So, have any of you lovely momies on my friend's list conquered the dreaded potty training? Any tips, ideas, places to get tips and ideas?

Widget seems to only realize she needs to potty when she's in the tub. Never when we're dressed. And she's taken to fibbing about whether her diaper is wet (when it's clearly ballooned to three times it's dry size) because she doesn't want to stop playing long enough to et a dry one.

Talking to my mother this weekend, she was advocating just getting her some regular underwear (not pull-ups) and letting her go in those - the theory being that when she wets she'll know it, and be uncomftable, which will give her incentive to let us know ahead of time. I'm thinking that'll be pretty bad for the furniture =).

Anyone?

I don't have children, but I've taken care of a lot of them and helped raise up my younger siblings and have had a lot of experience with potting training. So, for the girls it does seem to work better if they end up wetter when they don't use the toilet. Regular underwear with maybe a plastic liner panty over it would do the trick. She would feel wet and your house would be protected. It doesn't hurt to really reward the action either. One M&M every time she ventures to use the toilet or you can buy a new special toy and she gets to play with it for x amount of time each time she successfully uses the toilet (of course not being able to play with it at any other time), etc.

Yeah, it's not uncomfortable to have peed in a super-absorbent diaper like they make nowadays, because the kids don't feel wet. You could maybe switch to cloth diapers for a week with plastic pants, or maybe try Kooshies training pants, they are like cotton diaper versions of Pull-ups- they have an outside layer that doesn't leak everything through, but on the inside she'd still get the "wetness" sensation of a wet cloth diaper.

I think every kid is different. My experience with Poopsie was that she basically did it herself. She ahd a lot of peers doing it at the same time at day care, so a lot of that encouragement came from outside the house.

Some random thoughts:

- Let her watch you. She'll be impressed with how YOU don't wear a diaper and needs to have experience seeing how it's done. Of course you undoubtedly do this already, I don't know any mother who pees solo.

- The little potty chairs never worked for Poopsie. She wanted to use the real one. I got one of those little toilet seat rings you put on your regular toilet and just left it there.

- We used pull-ups, for transition's sake. I think that at the beginning of training it's too soon for regular training pants, you'll just have a mess and a frustrated Widget.

- I think the best rule to follow is to let Widget lead the way. There is no point in hurrying her, in fact hurrying will likely slow things down. Like a lot of things, you just need to be there and be ready when she DOES become ready.

I was amazed. I had fretted and worried about it for months, and in the end I hardly did anything at all. By last summer she was completely potty trained. Your mileage may vary...

Good luck!

It was between 2 1/2 and 3... sort of over that summer. By the time she was three it was pretty much done.

I guess I'm just not a big believer in Potty Training with capital letters. I mean, the potty's there, she'll want to use it eventually. You'll know when she needs help and/or rewards from you.

Sadly, this is one area where my being the oldest of five is of no help at all.

When I moved out, my mother was having trouble potty training my youngest sister. I brought this up with her and she said, "I don't know what to do. I've never had to potty train a child before."

Remembering that there were four kids before this one, and to the best of my knowledge all of us are toilet trained I intelligently asked, "Huh?"

"Well, you all pretty much potty trained yourselves. I never had to deal with this before."
