Interesting...
May. 21st, 2002 09:53 amHere is a story that uses the controversial picture from the photo contest my company is hosting as a jumping off point for a discussion of male and female sexual socialization. It's an interesting article. It also has a link to the photo, which is odd, because I thought it was decided that the picture wouldn't be published. I still think I'm horrified that it's available. All I can imagine is being that woman, and happening across the photo in the course of a normal day (I mean, how many people read Salon?) and just being devastated by it.
"But the Mardi Gras molesters cannot be dismissed as perverted monsters. They look jovial, clueless, entitled. They are the guys next door, our sons, caught up in an extreme rendering of "boys will be boys." This is, 100% what bothered me the most about this picture; that these boys just looked like what was happening was no big deal, something they were absolutely entitled to see and do. That just makes me shudder. It makes me fear for having a daughter, and glad I don't have a son to raise.
