Working today
May. 27th, 2002 11:15 amAnd I am bored bored bored. Ever since a few years ago when a site of medium importance had an issue on the 4th of July, the boss has insisted that someone staff the office for all holidays. Seniority and pushiness have ensured that I don't get stuck with a "major" one (no Turkey Day or Christmas for me!). Usually, there's 3 calls on a holiday - two from other co-workers checking in, and one from a misguided salesman who thinks the CEO works major holidays. Of course, the last holiday I worked had me at hosted.com until 1:00 in the morning replacing a Web Server. Hopefully that won't be the case this year.
Rock addendum
May. 27th, 2002 03:07 pmAs impressed as I might have been before by our (in the collective sense) pilgrim ancestors, I'm even more impressed by them now. I mean, Wiley and I worked for several hours yesterday, just to get the rocks out of one small patch of earth, so that I can have a little hobby-garden. We had modern tools, and it was a small space, and it still took us a long long time, and I was tired at the end of it.
Now imagine you have to grow enough food to feed yourself and your family, for an entire year, with a 4 month growing season, in soil just like that. With no modern tools, and no ready access to showers. I'm pretty impressed.
