As impressed as I might have been before by our (in the collective sense) pilgrim ancestors, I'm even more impressed by them now. I mean, Wiley and I worked for several hours yesterday, just to get the rocks out of one small patch of earth, so that I can have a little hobby-garden. We had modern tools, and it was a small space, and it still took us a long long time, and I was tired at the end of it.

Now imagine you have to grow enough food to feed yourself and your family, for an entire year, with a 4 month growing season, in soil just like that. With no modern tools, and no ready access to showers. I'm pretty impressed.

More rocks.

A vermont farmer and his young son were out clearing a field. The son asks him, "Where did all these rocks come from?". He explains, "Well, thousands of years ago, glaciers, big mountains of ice, spread south from the frozen north, and scraped all these rocks along with them.". "Oh. So, where did the glaciers go?", asks the son. The farmer thinks it over for a minute. "Back for more rocks.".
