This past weekend was sailing. I love sailing. And as I said before, I want a boat.

It was very very nice to get away for 48 hours of noooooo baby at all. Many thanks go to Miss Lorac for taking her off our hands for the weekend. We dropped Miss Widget off with Widget about 6:00, and snuck out, hoping to avoid a meltdown. We headed off for a quiet evening of dinner (YUM, sushi) and then headed for home. Got packed, and hung out and showered and went to bed.

Got up way.too.early to head down and meet Bill and Linda in Marion, which is where Iteration is moored (about an hour away). Winds were good, and there were boats EVERYWHERE. Apparently, this was the weekend of the biggest regatta in the area. Winds were so good, in fact, that for the first time ever, we were able to sail down to Hadley's instead of motoring. That made me very happy.

See little maps here )

We initially had some trouble with anchoring, but found some friends of Bill and Linda's who had a good anchor set and rafted up with them. The rest of the afternoon was spent lounging around a lot. Wiley swam, and went off for a sail in Little It. Then there was more lounging, and dinner, and more relaxing. Sunday was spent eating breakfast, then Wiley and I went and puttered around all the little islands in the inflatable. We tried in two places to break through the line of islands to come out over near the Vinyard, but were stymied by the on-rushing of the tides, and couldn't make it through with the little 2 horsepower motor. We tied up on Bull Island and tramped around looking for a good place to leave a geocache, should we be lucky enough to get to sail there again. We all had lunch and made ready to sail back. Once again, we had good wind, and were able to sail most of the way instead of motoring. Again, I was a happy Jenn. I was assiduous in applying sunscreen and came away with only a little pink for the weekend. Wiley was not so careful, and came away from the weekend quite pink. That made me giggle, since he has only ever burned in the Caribbean.

Then home, or to lorac's to collect the little one (who was in the foulest mood EVER) and then home to go "Wow. that was a great weekend. I'm exhausted" over and over. It was a great weekend.

I meant to rhapsodize here about why I like sailing so much, but I'm out of time. I'll write that later.

It's been two summers since I got to go sailing, almost to the weekend. I'd fogotten how much I loved it.

Part of my love for it is simply because I love the ocean. I love any excuse to be outside, to smell the salt air, and to be able to just sit and relax amidst it all. When we went on our honeymoon cruise, I loved the sense of being in the middle of nowhere. You don't get quite that feeling on Buzzard's Bay, but it still feels blessedly solitary.

So, with all of that, I should love power boating as well, right? Maybe, but I certainly don't. Because there's far more to it than that. )

Miss Widget took multiple steps tonight, and repeated the performance several times, without falling over. Her smart daddy found the perfect lure for making her walk in a freshly popped bowl of popcorn, which she loves. She did it a couple of times for me when I got home from work.

It's about darn time, eh?
