I need a sailboat. No. Really.
Aug. 6th, 2002 06:47 pmThis past weekend was sailing. I love sailing. And as I said before, I want a boat.
It was very very nice to get away for 48 hours of noooooo baby at all. Many thanks go to Miss Lorac for taking her off our hands for the weekend. We dropped Miss Widget off with Widget about 6:00, and snuck out, hoping to avoid a meltdown. We headed off for a quiet evening of dinner (YUM, sushi) and then headed for home. Got packed, and hung out and showered and went to bed.
Got up way.too.early to head down and meet Bill and Linda in Marion, which is where Iteration is moored (about an hour away). Winds were good, and there were boats EVERYWHERE. Apparently, this was the weekend of the biggest regatta in the area. Winds were so good, in fact, that for the first time ever, we were able to sail down to Hadley's instead of motoring. That made me very happy.
This is a kind of overview of Buzzard's Bay, to the west of Cape Cod. We started up north in Marion, and sailed down to where the little red star is.

This is a close up view of where we anchored. Almost all the islands here (except Bull Island) are privately owned by very rich people, but nothing can stop folks from anchoring there. Well, technically, I don't know if that's true. We might anchor there by the graciousness of the folks who own the islands. We anchored for the night north of Bull Island, in the little protected spot by Uncatena Island.

We initially had some trouble with anchoring, but found some friends of Bill and Linda's who had a good anchor set and rafted up with them. The rest of the afternoon was spent lounging around a lot. Wiley swam, and went off for a sail in Little It. Then there was more lounging, and dinner, and more relaxing. Sunday was spent eating breakfast, then Wiley and I went and puttered around all the little islands in the inflatable. We tried in two places to break through the line of islands to come out over near the Vinyard, but were stymied by the on-rushing of the tides, and couldn't make it through with the little 2 horsepower motor. We tied up on Bull Island and tramped around looking for a good place to leave a geocache, should we be lucky enough to get to sail there again. We all had lunch and made ready to sail back. Once again, we had good wind, and were able to sail most of the way instead of motoring. Again, I was a happy Jenn. I was assiduous in applying sunscreen and came away with only a little pink for the weekend. Wiley was not so careful, and came away from the weekend quite pink. That made me giggle, since he has only ever burned in the Caribbean.
Then home, or to lorac's to collect the little one (who was in the foulest mood EVER) and then home to go "Wow. that was a great weekend. I'm exhausted" over and over. It was a great weekend.
I meant to rhapsodize here about why I like sailing so much, but I'm out of time. I'll write that later.
