Healthy kid

Ms. Widget had her yearly checkup this morning.

All signs point to a healthy kid.

59 pounds, 50 inches tall. 75% percentile for weight and 80% for height (she's dropping off in the height from her birth level of 95%), but both are consistent from last year, which is what they're looking to see.

She didn't do so well on the eye exam... so we get to go to the eye doctor for a full evaluation. She's technically still officially considered ok, but she tested at 20/30, which is the bottom of the acceptable range for 6 year olds and not in the acceptable range for 7 year olds. Since she's mere weeks away from 7, we decided it would be best to take her for a more comprehensive evaluation. That she might need glasses is, of course, no surprise. That she needs them this soon is, but only a little bit. SHe's excited, because she's been wanting glasses for a while.

I'll confess, I am a bad pet owner. I never remeber (or botherwith) the whole preventative care part of owning a cat. In truth, if I am being completely honest, I only manage to remember that stuff for Hannah because school requires it, and I nearly never remember it for myself. So, it's not as if I'm discriminating against the pets, really.

But, we let Pya and Cosmo go outside. Where they could tangle with other cats, or worse. The more I thought about it, the more keeping them in compliance with the mandated rabies vaccinations made sense. But it's not as if you can take them in for just the rabies. Full exams, all the vaccines, all the tests, the whole works.

I signed them up for their torture sessions, and we all trekked over to the vet's office last week.

They were not happy. Widget was thrilled to get to tag along. I was blown away by the stitcker shock.

Since I didn't have their medical records, the vets were all tsk-tsking me for not having brought them in sooner. I was pretty sure that E and her stepmom were better cat owners than I am, so I wasn't exactly worried, but apparently I should have been *eyeroll*.

All tests came back that theyare, as I expected, entirely and perfectly fine. And I'm about $600 poorer.

Stupid animals.

I'm not sure if I've ever ranted about this here before, but I hate NIMBYism. Hate it, hate it, hate it. Seriously, I consider the behavior it engenders to a be a sign of significant moral failing.

Call me a complete goober if you will, but I do honestly believe that sometimes, someone has to take one for the team, as it were, and I also believe that being on the receiving end of whatever "bad" stuff is going to happen needs to be spread around. No one group, or place, or town should ever have to do all the sucking up so that another group or town doesn't have to do any. I think this is true, even when it might mean that the people benefitting from my taking one for the team are people I don't know. I think it's true if I get no benefit, because I persist in hoping that other people feel the same way; that it is a reciprocal engagement where each person involved recognizes that sometimes, you make sacrifices for the greater good, and sometimes other people do, and it all works out in the end.

Like I said. Goober. Stupid, pollyanna, optimistic goober.

And it makes me really realy furious when I have to deal with people who think that instead, someone ELSE should make all the sacrifices, and their little worlds should never be anything other than perfect, exactly how THEY want it, because they are special (and this part really rankles) and better than me.

With all that said, it warms my heart to see the hospital hill wankers get their asses handed to them on a technicality tonight. Oh yes, yes it does.
