This year for Christmas, my sister went the route of making a charitable donation in our name instead of giving Wiley and I Christmas presents. She choose a very interesting group to donate to, called Donors Choose. They accept proposals from teachers in the NYC area requesting things they would like for their classrooms (these seem to range from basic supplies to equipment for after school clubs), based around things they need or specific things they would like to teach. As a donor, you can look through the proposals and choose to fund the ones that interest you the most. I've spent this morning lookig through the proposals, and found about 10 that if I could, I'd fund in their entirety.

It seems like a pretty nifty group - you can find something that matches your interest, and it feels a look more personal than sending a check off to a large charity. Of course, it helps that schools are a soft spot for me.

Anyway, this seemed like such a neat idea, I just wanted to tell other people about it.

my, that's just *marvellous*. thank you for telling us; it's fascinating to read the proposals, even if I can't afford to donate anything right now.

That is very cool! William and I are talking about doing a charitable donation instead of wedding favors...maybe we could find a small project to fund as our donation.
