Opinions please...

So, earlier today, I'm happily browsing my friend's page, and see a community post... using one of *my* icons. This very one, in fact. Probably my most distinctive, most amusing, (formerly) most unique ones.

And I'm cranky. While this isn't a photo of my own, it's from a fairly obscure source, so it is unlikely she just happened upon it out there in the big bad world. 'Specially when I just used the icon in the same community last week.

Now, the dilemna, and where I need the opinions, pretty please. Am I psycho for even caring? If I'm not, what's the appropriate response here? Would I be out of line if I dropped her a polite e-mail asking her to not use it? It's not my photo, so I can't claim copyright on it, but it bugs me that someone would swipe it, then post to the same community with it. Hell, I don't think I'd even mind if she just refrained from posting in knitting with it, since that's our only overlap.

I don't know what the proper response is, but I would be a little bit irritated myself. It seems only right to ask first. I have a couple of heckonwheels's icons, but I asked her and she said I could use them.

Yeah, 'zactly. I've swiped icons, but always asked first. I probably would have let chickie take it, if she'd asked, too. *grumblegrumblegrumble*

you might want to privately ask her if she'd mind not using it in the community you're both a part of, to avoid confusion.

asking her to cease using it altogether is probably going to cause more trouble than it's worth.

I think I would reply to one of her posts, using your icon, and saying "Nice icon ... where did you get it?!"

But this might invite all sort of trouble ...

See, that was my first thought. But then I thought that doing that might be a little too passive-aggresive drama queen. Not that I'm not that way naturally, mind you, I just generally don't like to advertise the fact.

I take the attitude that sometimes people need to know when they're being dickheads, and you're doing them a favour in the long run by pointing it out.

On the other hand, if you feel really strongly about it, it might be better for your blood pressure to just let it drop :-)

Sadly, she lists no e-mail contact on her bio page, which means that the only way to ask is publicly, commenting on the group. I'm not sure it's worth that much public drama.

I think I would be inclined to ask them if they minded not using it in that community. I think if it were me I'd be pissed unless it was something obviously common--like my dilbert icons.

No, I don't blame you either. I mean, I wouldn't rend my garments over it, but I think you could ask the person to either stop using the icon or give you some credit. Failin' that, have them ritually maimed.
