Dick and Jane

sierciaMY mom sent two books up for Widget this weekend (her boss got freebies at a trade show. Woot.), the new Eric Carle and a Treasury of Dick and Jane. I was quite skeptical of the Dick and Jane book when she told me about it, since well, we all remember them as being terrible, right?
And they are terrible as reading material, don't get me wrong. But damn hell, Widget picked it up and within minutes, was reading herself, albeit with some help from the grownups. Like, reading to the point of being able to read stories we hadn't read to her yet. She needs help sounding out each new word as she encounters them, but is recognizing them easily on subsequent pages.
It's so exciting to watch her doing this. Whee!
