Vacation recap
Aug. 28th, 2004 04:12 pmEven my shortened friends list puts me back at 375 entries if I want to catch up on this week. Goodness, posty mcpostalots, all of you! So before I get all bogged down in that, I wanted to write about my week, before it all gets forgotten and stuff.
We stayed at the same place as last year, same cabin even. Felt a little like coming home, which was kind of funny. I like the constancy of things like that - staying the same place, knowing where the problems (thin walls, miserable shower) and the joys (screened in porch, closer cabin to the lake) are. We got settled in, Widget headed right for the lake with Grandpa, my mom and I got caught up. Quiet dinner, relaxing evening.
Monday, Widget and Grandpa went to Storyland, Wiley and I went out to find a driving range. We found one, whacked some balls around, pondered going horseback riding and decided not to, went up to Conway for some shopping, had some lunch, meandered back to the cabin. Stopped along the way for some corn that was so fresh picked it was still dripping sap. Came back, played in the lake, had some dinner and some quiet time, relaxed some more.
Tuesday, Wiley decided to go out kayaking in Winnepesaukee, Widget and her Grandpa decided to stay home and play in the lake all day, and Mom and I decided to hit NeedleArts and Patternworks (stitching and knitting sister stores to Keepsake Quilting) and the Fiber Loft in Henniker. We got Mom some yarn for her first knitting adventure, I picked up the pattern I've been coveting, Mom bought some stitching kits, all on our first stop. I drooled over spinning wheels at the Fiber Loft (the saleslady there recommended the Louet S10 as her best beginner wheel, and that's the one I've been coveting online for months) and almost bought one. Instead bought some handcarders and some gorgeous hand-painted silk. The wheel can wait. Came home, played in the lake, Wiley and Widget went out for pizza and my parents went out to dinner, and I stayed home and knitted by the lake.
Wednesday, we were going to go hiking, but then Widget was in a foul mood, so my parents went off noodling around on their own, and Wiley, Widget and I laid low at the cabin. I feel like we did something else, but I can't remember what it was. Wiley and I went out for dinner in the evening, yum, Common Man GOOD. Came home and finished my sweater!!!!
Thursday, we (everyone but my mom) went for the hike - we went up Bald Mountain, which is a little short mountain in Franconia Notch State Park. It was Widget's first walking hike, and she did GREAT. There was some tricky rock scrambling manuevers, and with a fair amount of coaching, she made it up and over most of them all by herself. The view from the top was lovely, we had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. After we hiked back down, we rode the tram to the top of Cannon Mountain and walked around the summit. Then home, with a stop off for ice cream. Back to the cabin for naptime, then more time playing on the beach. Quiet dinner in, followed by more relaxing time.
Friday, my parents headed off for some sightseeing of their own, and Wiley, Widget and I headed for FunSpot in Wiers Beach. Oh my god, it is where old video games go to live out their lives in a happy place. All the games I remembered from when I was a teenager. It was like heaven. Introduced Widget to SkeeBall and Whack-a-Mole and videogames. After that, we found Go-carts that would let Widget go as a passenger, and then we took in some mini-golf, which was frustrating. Last year, Widget just whacked the ball around and was happy. This year, she figured out the point to the game, but went bazoo because she couldn't quite do it. She ended up hitting the ball with help, from the tee-off, then walking down, picking the ball up from whereever it stopped rolling, putting it down an inch from the hole and hitting it in from there. Silly goofball. We came home, played at the beach for a while, then all went out to dinner afterwards at the Lobster Pound. Damn good ribs, and a yummy lobster too! *drool*
We packed up this morning and headed for home. Only one little traffic snarl, and the house was all in one piece, except for two dead fish (Sorry, shark and whale)
Highlights of the week included: taking the time to bring the kayak up with us, everyone loved having it around, my dad went out every day in the early morning, Wiley went out every day, I went out a couple of times. Taking the kayak out in the moonlight on Friday night. FINISHING MY SWEATER!!! Watching Widget make friends out on the beach. No phones, pagers or e-mail all week. Listening to Widget talk about StoryLand. Seeing a heron in a far corner of the lake while out in the kayak. I made immense amounts of progress on my knitting projects and my stitching projects. Listening to my mom read Cat in the Hat to Widget, with all the funny voices. Having perfect weather, absolutely every day we were there.
Overall, it was hugely relaxing and wonderful, exactly what I needed to recharge a little bit. Tomorrow, Wiley races, Monday I have Widget for most of the day, then I jet off for a week in West Palm Beach with Ms. Shani. Even if we're working, I think we're going to have a damn good time and all. Have aparty to go to tonight, so I should go shower while the getting is good. Gotta figure out what I'm going to wear.

Date: 2004-09-02 04:01 pm (UTC)I am very nervous, and she is very excited. I'm dreading the schedule change, but assuming I'll adapt in a while. It's scary sending your kidlet off to new strangers, but I'm confident that this school is a good environment for her. Doesn't make it any less nerve wracking, though.

Date: 2004-08-30 02:14 pm (UTC)We'll be heading up north this coming weekend, and it is sorely needed. I remember Funspot fondly - there was a little outpost in the town I grew up in.
