Well, that was a weekend

Saturday? Pretty good. Widget was feeling a little punk on Saturday, so we spent the early part of the day lounging at home. We hit game night later on, had some yummy Thai food and a good time playing games (me) and watching movies (Widget). Wiley was off in New York, doing car racing stuff.

Sunday? Started pretty good. Got some time to myself, headed over to Lorac's to bask in the happy glow of the new baby. Wiley and Widget headed off to see "Cars", and about 15 minutes later he called, that he'd been in an accident and I needed to come get Widget. Eeeek. Heart pounding, I bolted to the car and sped into town. He posted his account of the accident over here, with a link to pictures of our poor smooshed little Golf. Took Widget to the doc's to get checked out, and she appears to be just fine.

No we do the dance with the insurance company to see if it's totalled (probably) and worth anything (probably not), and the dance between the two of us to decide on what car we're going to get to replace it. It's mostly Wiley's car, so he gets more of a vote, but I hold the purse strings, so it'll be an interesting negotiation to be sure.

Mostly, I'm just glad they were both okay.

But racing cars have all sorts of pragmatic safety features: fat tires for better traction, larger disc brakes to stop faster; souped up engine and suspension to get out of the way of trucks barrelling down on your tail, or random pianos tunnel ceiling panels dropping from above.

The car's gotta be worth something, with any luck enough for a down payment on a new car. If you've never totalled a car before, I should note that it pays to research current local prices for your model and year - if you can provide the insurance adjuster with evidence that the car would sell for more than you are offered, he or she should be able to give you more. At least, this worked when I totalled my Prizm back in the day.

Yeah, I have an idea about what it's worth, and it'll be SOMETHING, but not an entire down payment. Still, we'll survive.

Sounds like not a bad idea to know what the beastie would (in theory) be worth. I so don't enjoy dealing with this kind of thing (which is why Wiley does more of it.)

Me too! Can I tell you how much I didn't love getting that phone call? Although really, in the scheme of things, there are much worse ones to get.

And I'll be keeping a close grip on the strings. Somebody has to, and Wiley's way too much of a car nut =).

My mother still has nightmares from the phone call from Fairfax Hospital which started with "your son knows his name."

My brother decided to zoom into a crowded intersection on a bicycle and got knocked off. The driver of the car freaked out, and insisted he not be moved until an ambulance arrived. He could have walked it off, he was fine.

Just the fact that it was Wiley calling and not a state trooper or someone from a hospital made it better. Still, not great.

(Speaking of, what happened to your SiL's son that you posted about a while back?)

I've not heard directly about BJ, only through my parents. Sounds like dysfunction is happening. Last I heard he was back home, not well, and hasn't done anything about pursing civilian or military medical care.
