It was my turn to do the veggie pickup on Saturday, and the pickup was bedlam. Totally stressed me out and made me cranky. Instead of nice pre-packed boxes, you had to pick all your own stuff from bins, and there was only one copy of the list of who was supposed to get what for the crown of people. It would have been bad enough picking up one share, but picking up three was insanity. May have to rethink this shared pickup idea if they don't get better when things settle down.

Anyway, this week, we got:

4 heads of lettuce
2 bunches of arugula
2 bunches of beets
1 bunch of swiss chard
1 bunch of kale
3 zucchinis
1 quart of strawberries
2 bunches of radishes
1 bag of sugar snap peas
1 bunch of shell peas
1 small flat of flowers (not sure what we picked, Widget choose the ones she thought were pretty)

I think that's it. A LOT of food. At least this week we'll be home to cook it all up.

Agreed, they were disorganized in the same way last week and it really made me stressed. I know I screwed up the orders I packed for everyone because it was so hectic. (I ended up shorting us so that at least you and Lorac got what you were supposed to have.)

Sounds really yummy! And yes, a lot of food. Got any ideas on what you'll be making with all that?

For the kale, you can do what we've been doing lately. Get a can (14.5oz) of cannellini beans, a package of sausage of your choosing (I often get sweet italian chicken sausage that come 4 pieces/pack), an onion, a couple cloves of garlic, olive oil, salt & pepper (and other seasonings as you see fit). Slice the onion & mince the garlic, then add them to a skillet where you've heated up some olive oil on med/high heat. While they are cooking (to the golden stage), slice up the sausages (about 1/4" thick). Add the sausages and cook them until brown. Meanwhile, wash the kale, strip the leaves from the stem, and chop it up roughly. Add them to the skillet. Let them cook down a bit, then add the drained beans. Cook until all is hot, add salt & pepper to taste. Yum.

I'm really curious, because our farmshare seems to be extremely skimpy compared to what others get. Ours started 3 weeks later, and we get a lot less each week. May I pry, and ask what yours charges for a full/half shares? I really want to know if we're getting totally ripped off. I mean, they're nice people and all, but we're getting WAY WAY WAY less food than anyone else I know, not just you.

Huh. I guess I didn't realize the a "half share" pays 66% of the full price but only gets about 40% as much food, then.

We got a lettuce, a very bug-eaten arrugula, a bunch of beets, a bunch of radishes, 2 teensy zucchini, and a pint of strawberries. There was a tiny baggie of snap peas that took Jon about 30 seconds to polish off. No chard or kale, which I would have liked, and no plants. You seriously got a WHOLE FLAT of them? That's so annoying.

To be fair, it was so damn crowded that I couldn't park, and so I sent Jon to gather our stuff while I idled the car. So maybe he just screwed up.

Still feeling ripped off, though. I need to find out what my Somerville friends are paying for theirs, which started in May and generates dozens of "What am I going to DO with so much food" entries.
