Weekend wrap-up
Mar. 18th, 2002 02:56 pmWeekend was AWESOME.
My flights on Friday were uneventful... there wasn't even much traffic getting out of the Metro Boston area, and we made it to Providence in a flat hour. There were also NO lines at the airport, so Wiley and Widget hung out with me in the little Cafe area for a while. Through security, no problem, got my flight, changed planes in Cleveland, all uneventful. ERJ-whatevers are seriously uncomfortable planes, but what can you do? Found smurfchick and kieron just fine, grabbed my suitcase and we headed off. Picked up the concert ticket, and finally got some foooooood. (Having not wanted to destroy my tummy on airport food, I had, quite literally, eaten a pretzel, and a bag of peanuts all day to that point). Went to a yummy place near smurfchick's place, got lots of food, and went to her place and crashed while she did laundry.
Headed off to the concert - figured, getting there an hour before the doors opened wouldn't be too bad, right? But no, the line stretched forever and a day. We hiked to the end of it, and waited... people watching and chatting and having fun. And we got in, and found an awesome place to stand, and the concert started. The opening band, was, well, b.a.d. Like, I'd drive my car off a cliff to make the pain stop kind of bad. Thankfully, it didn't last long.
And then Ani came on. I can't even describe it, She was AMAZING. She played all this old stuff I thought I'd never get to see her perform... lesse here...

Gods, now I can't remember what else she played. Suffice it to say, she was awesome. The, for an encore, she performed THIS, which I had not seen before, and which was just devastating to see performed.
After the concert we returned to smurfchick's place and slept. Saturday, we went to smurfchick's favorite chain restaurant, Chipotle, and then to the Columbus Zoo. Of course, it was freezing, and most of the animals were hiding inside. Except for the turtles, which were already inside, and horny as hell (Ask kieron to show you the pictures of the turtle stacks. Hee). And I got to see manatees up close and personal. They were neat. It's hard to explain the attraction.. they're not cute, and certainly not cuddly. But something in their faces... they just seem old, and knowing, and the epitome of everything we should try to protect... I don't think I can explain it. And kieron and smurfchick bought me an Elephant! It's wicked cute. That was followed by more vegging at smurfchick's place, before going out to the Melting Pot for a world of fondue. It took us 2 1/2/ hours to eat dinner!
We rolled home and hung out talking for a while. The next morning we went for breakfast, then off to the airport. The flights home were also uneventful, except for a bit of turbulence between Columbus and Cleveland (scarier in a little plane). Met Wiley and the Widget at the airport. She was so not-excited to see me, it was a little disappointing. But she did like the stuffed otter I bought for her at the Zoo.
Overall, I had a really good time. It was nice to see kie and smurfchick, and nice that we didn't do a lot, either. The quiet downtime was heavenly, as was the lots of reading time that I had. I finished the Return of the King, and got halfway through Daughter of Fortune by the time I got off the plane yesterday, which is good, since book club approaches quickly. They both did a god job of not making me feel like a third wheel, and it's really nice to see two people I love so happy together. Both of them, this weekend, when the other was out of hearing, told me how happy and thrilled and in love they were. It was crazy sweet and made me smile a lot.
Thanks for a great weekend, guys!

Date: 2002-03-18 01:11 pm (UTC)Fondue was ... mmmmm
Start with a cheese fondue course (we had traditional swiss with wine etc.)
Then a salad course (three different salad options)
Then you had a choice of meat combinations and a choice of cooking methods (vegetable stock, traditional with oil, or coq au vin). We chose a bunch of random meats (shrimp, salmon, steak, chicken and coq au vin for cooking
Then there was dessert - about a zillion hocolat and additional flavor combinations (we chose S'mores - chocolate, marshmallow and graham) with fruit, brownies, cheesecake, and marshmallows for dipping. It was YUMMY, and a LOT of food!
Check out www.meltingpot.com to see for yourself!
Yay!

Mmm. Fondue.
