Some of the brightest points in my horrific Atlanta grad school experiences were seeing the IGs at home, near Emory, in the mid 90s. I really loved it. After NIS, they were so fervently loved by loads of my freinds who needed a little help getting through the darkness, that I even put a little line in my dissertation acknowledgements to Emily herself. Theres even a thing in one of the liner notes that resembles a comment from a long letter I wrote her. That was sweet. At least I know she got it.
I think the comment is inside the text files/liner notes. It says that one of the biggest reasons people love them is that the lyrics help them see through darkness, and find refuge in the descriptions of someone elses (read: Emily's) resolution of the pain. Probably other people wrote in, but it was so like what I put in my letter, and the letter was very descriptive of me and my freinds, that she must have taken it to heart.
We were at Emory at only slightly overlapping times; I played a wedding with her father Don Saliers, who was a professor of music in organ. I didnt talk about his daughter, as it was probably a slight thorn in their somewhat religious family side that their daughter had expanded her gender identity past the usual accepted role. As I understood, Emily and Amy were both Theology majors; we never met.
Theres also a line she speaks in the studio about how her father made her take classical guitar lessons. I could completely see that happening. Someday maybe we'll meet...
Go girls, go girls
