My best friend had to put her cat to sleep today. There are no words to say how sad I am for her, and for Daniel. He was a very special cat, and he meant the world to her, and there was nothing anyone could do for him, and now there's nothing I can do for her.

I feel just awful.

I know what you mean.

I vascillate between wanting to call and offer condolences, and wanting to give her space. I don't know what to do. I think maybe I'll call tomorrow after they've had some time to adjust. I hate being so far away at times like this, feeling useless.

*sigh* It's a big bag of suck. I just love Carrie (and Daniel) to pieces.

So many times people who don't have cats don't understand... but we spend so much of our lives with our pets, that there are huge voids when they leave.

It's great that you were able to comfort her a bit, and just offer a truly understanding presence.

I think the not understanding stems from those who do not view pets as a child in the family. I cried long and hard when my baby rats died (actually, one died of old age) and my housemate just couldn't understand why I thought they were part of my family.

Cats

I cried more when our old cat named "Cat" (and later "Old Lady" when there was more then one cat in the house and we wanted to avoid confusion) died than I did when my Grandmother died. Partially because I was older and understood it more, partially because I knew the cat better.

Despite my days of youth spent torturing that poor feline I missed her greatly. I think I'll cry as much when Blotch dies since I've known her almost my entire life and she is reaching old cat age (about 16).

Cats are great, we just need to breed ones that don't die.

My cat is never going to die. She is going to outlive me. When I informed her of this over the weekend she didnt seem to buy it, in fact she looked at me like I was quite mad. But its true. It has to be.
